Welcome to the ISCM World New Music Festival 2006

grenzenlos ("without borders")
14 to 29 July 2006 in Stuttgart

The World New Music Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) will take place from the 14th to the 29th of July 2006 in Stuttgart. The event is being organized by Musik der Jahrhunderte in collaboration with the German Society for New Music. The Festival should explore the questions as well as the opportunities which confront young artists in our globalised world. The phenomenon of ‘boundlessness’ will be explored and discussed in all its possibilities and problems. In addition to the presentation of the newest artistic projects and technologies, the intercultural meeting of musicians from different nations will stand at the forefront of the festival.

The Project GLOBAL INTERPLAY, which has been running from May 2005 till September 2006, focuses on this goal of intercultural dialogue. In six major cities on four continents (New York, Accra, Cairo, Schanghai/Beijing and Berlin), teams of young composers are being formed. In local workshops they will be given instruction in music traditions and composition styles. The individual groups will be able to begin intensive discussions concerning their artistic existence and work through intranet and five international conferences. Each team will participate in a composition competition, whose winning score will be performed at the World New Music Festival.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute, Musik der Jahrhunderte has organized a worldwide team of "Ambassadors", who should develop contacts with artists in their respective countries, especially in East Asia/China, Arabic countries, Africa and in Latin America.

A central component of the events will be music theater, encompassing nine world premieres. Additionally, choral and orchestral concerts, ensemble and chamber music concerts, interdisciplinary projects, installations and sound-art should give a glimpse of the present artistic creativity.
Four international symposiums on the theme "Globalisation and the Freedom of the Arts" from July 2004 until May 2006 lead up to the festival. Internationally renowend philosophers, sociologists, ethnologists, and cultural scholars are invited to talk about the political, legal, economic and cultural aspects of globalisation.

Parallel to the artistic program of the festival, the international convention of the ISCM with members from over 30 countries will take place.

The most important venue for the World New Music Festival will be the Theaterhaus Pragsattel. Musik der Jahrhunderte is searching for collaboration and coordination with other regional and national cultural organizations and institutions – for example the Akademie Schloss Solitude, the SWR, the Forum Neues Musiktheater, the Staatsoper, the Kunstmuseum as well as with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, the DAAD, and many others.

In view of this great event, Musik der Jahrhunderte began to expand their audience in September 2004. The educational project CLASH intends to bring children, teenagers, and adults closer to new music. CLASH presents the Child and Youth Congress N[you]. Music in a globalized world during the festival.
