Chico Mello ( Brazil )

Chico Mello was born in Curitiba (Brazil). He studied medicine and music in his hometown. Compositional studies in Sao Paulo, as well as in Berlin with Dieter Schnebel and Witold Szalonek followed. He experienced important encounters with Latin American and European composers at the ‘Cursos latinoamericanos de música contemporanea’. Chico Mello works as a composer and performer in the field of experimental and improvisational music, in addition to his work for the music theatre. His works were performed at many of the important festivals. He was a scholar of the Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung (Heinrich Strobel Foundation) of the SWR, as well as multiple scholar of the Berliner Kultursenat (Berlin Cultural Senate). His studies lead him to Paris in line with the Cité Internationale des Arts. He toured most European countries, many of the South-American states, the USA, and Russia, giving concerts. From 1997 until 2000, he was the director of the ensemble ContempoSonoro (Curitiba), curator of the Escuta-Festival in Rio de Janeiro, as well as a curator at the music department of the Oficina de Música de Curitiba.
