das árvores II (1999/2006) for 9 instrumentalists and their gesture
Chico Mello
Trp., Ob., BKlar., Vl., Vla., Vc., Kb, Klav., Perk.– und Elektronik
25 min
This piece takes further the concepts which I developed in das árvores and entre janelas: my interest in regularities – repetition, recurrence, again and again, ...– and its relationships to polarities – homogeneous-heterogeneous, uniformity-multiplicity, collective-individual, dependence-independence, construction-coincidence.
Played at intervals of c. 20-25 seconds throughout the whole piece are quiet tutti chords, which gradually and permanently grow or shrink. In between, heterogeneous materials are played from loudspeakers and in various groupings of the nine instruments – for the most part fragments of Brazilian ‘música popular’ – dependent on or independent of one another. Solos (with fragments from some of my earlier solo pieces), duos, trios, quartets and so on.
The trees, with their peaceful verticality, their apparent independence, their way of growing or shrinking (upwards/downwards, overlaid, together, interspersed) and the intermediate space made perceptible through them were stimuli for this musical concept.
